Our St. Joseph Family Y began 130 years ago to nurture the potential of kids, promote healthy living, and foster social responsibility. Today, our mission is the same, but now more than ever, we have the opportunity to positively impact so many lives in our community.
Our community, like our nation, is facing increasing critical health issues like diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and more. These issues are harming individuals, families and communities, inflicting not only physical pain, but mental, emotional, and economical pain as well. Consider these frightening statistics on childhood obesity:
- 19.6% of children (6-11) are obese, up from 6% in 1980.
- 18.1% of adolescents (12-19) are obese, up from 5% in 1980.
- 30% of students in Missouri high schools are overweight
Improving the health of our community is what we do. Everyday. At the Y, we have opened our doors to thousands of children and families so they have the opportunity to grow in spirit, mind and body and tackle the critical health issues mentioned above head on. We are so committed to this that our goal at the Y is to get 25% of our community physically active by 2015. It’s a big goal, but we’re making progress!
In addition to promoting better health through physical fitness, our very successful and growing Y child care and youth programs enable parents to work, return to school, or gain new skills, knowing that their children are in an excellent, safe, and affordable environment where they can continue to learn, grow and develop – strengthening the entire family.
We need your help so we can expand our programming to even more people and families - touching more lives and making our community even better and stronger. Improving our downtown facility and building a new YMCA Family Campus will allow us to do just that.
